Coffee kindness

I was four hours into an 850-mile drive Saturday when I stopped for gas and coffee.

The gas station was one of those gleaming Taj Mahals of Travel. So much better than a scuzzy interchange pothole whose bathrooms almost encourage peeing your pants.

At the coffee counter, I waited from a virus-safe distance while a man filled a cup.

“I gotta order one of those online,” he said cheerfully, pointing to my mask. He wore a blue paper jobbie.

“Yeah, they’re great,” I said of my fabric mask that had cost $7 online. “You can wash and reuse ’em.”

I then approached the coffee machine, which ground beans before dispensing brew. Activating it required using a touchscreen, and I was flummoxed. The man assisted.

He lined up to pay, showing his coffee to the cashier and telling her to add $40 for gas.

“And I’ll get his coffee,” he said, gesturing toward me.

Thank you, Blue-Mask Man. Acts of kindness such as yours grease a day with joy. May you inspire us all to commit more daily blessings of kindness.

    Random acts of kindness!

I’ve been the recipient several times. Once, when I was in line at CC’s drive-up window. When I went to pay, I was told the car in front paid for my order. So, I decided to reciprocate by paying for the order of the car behind me. Fortunately, it wasn’t much.

Another time, I was in Whole Foods & discovered I had left my wallet at home. A lady behind me told the cashier that she would cover it. Now, you know any purchases at Whole Foods will not be insignificant, particularly a week’s worth of groceries.
