I rarely can’t find something to write or say. If you know me, then you know: Gauger has words.
So I was surprised last week when words wouldn’t come. I sat mute, eyes wet, grasping for any wisp of a thought, flailing for words.
And …
Nothing.
My silence sprang from a blessing. It was the best kind of a blessing – of esteem, appreciation. Care.
It’s been eight months since my cancer diagnosis. I’d like to report that I’m well, that treatment has vanquished this rude interference. I can’t, because it hasn’t.
But I can report this: people are good. I know because they – family, friends, my church community, co-workers – have shown they care.
As have my university students.
It was a former student who, last week, swept away all my words. He’d visited to deliver a care package from current and former students.
Their fourth such package.
They shouldn’t have. My job is to serve them, not the other way ’round. Yet there they were again, serving me.
I feel cared for. And blessed.
Beyond all words.
Except.
Thank you.

Thank you, my fellow GNP Jammer 1981!
Good people deserve to be treated with care. Your positive treatment and good health are daily prayers. You care for others, and you should be cared for too. Hang in there.
Thank you, my fellow ink-stained wretch.
Continued prayers for your well-being, Jeff. May your words flow according to your need, and may your students shower you with gifts of love.
Darlene, thank you.
Thinking about you, Jeff. People feel called to care for you because you’ve taken such good care of the people in your life. I know. I’m one of them.
Hang in there.
Thank you, Nick, my former colleague and now a friend.
The support and prayers from others means everything. It helps make the fight winnable. Dont be shy about telling us what you need.
