Artichokes Are Ick

The internet and especially social media assault us with declarations and advice. In that spirit, I hold these “truths” to be self-evident:

That Peanut M&M’s are better than plain and all M&M’s are better than jelly beans.

Shorts are more comfortable than long pants.

Avocados are meh.

Artichokes are ick.

And hurricanes are scarier than tornadoes.

That non-fiction is more interesting than fiction.

Pineapple belongs on pizza.

Arguing about Oxford commas is silly.

The Midwest is underrated.

And breakfast is overrated.

That rising early beats sleeping in.

Hot summers beat cold winters.

Coffee beats hot tea but iced tea beats lemonade.

Streaming beats cable TV.

And calling beats texting.

That reading is amazing.

Writing is fun.

Grammar is nifty.

Verbs power sentences.

Big words clog readers’ minds.

Small talk is fun until it isn’t.

And everyone deserves to experience the wind-in-the face sensation of riding a motorcycle.

My “truths” aren’t truths at all, of course. They’re my tastes and quirks, and they’re endearing or irritating. They make me, me. As do yours for you, even if you prefer jelly beans.

I will cede my motorcycle face to you (and my brother and son). I’m not sold on pineapple on pizza, but I like artichokes (except that time at a restaurant in Little Italy where I had to strip the good part off the bad — I don’t like to wrestle my dinner). Grammar is good. Well said.

Right with you there on those “truths.” I love artichokes, especially stuffed!
