Our miserable year clobbered Halloween fun, as with so much. So, although 30-Second Read is a day late in celebrating ghouls and sweet treats, we offer this tale of Halloweens past.
Here’s David Sanders of Omaha:
“When I was in the 5th Grade (1963), it rained on Halloween. So my brother and I couldn’t Trick or Treat. So my dad bribed us.
“‘How about it if I just buy each of you a box of candy bars, and you can skip the cold and the wet?’
“A great compromise!
“In those days a box of bars totaled 20. … And they were probably bigger in those days also.
“I ordered Snickers bars and my brother ordered Milky Way. We did a small swap, but we basically got to keep a really good pile of candy.
“The next year, 1964, even though it didn’t rain, we opted for the same arrangement.”
Smart! Young Dave turned rain into candy bars, foreshadowing a career in marketing research. Well played, whippersnapper.
We’re guessing Dad benefited, too, perhaps by staying dry himself. Well played, Dad!
