The hot question you didn’t ask

The National Weather Service warns that my patch of North America will experience “excessive heat” this week.

“Sunny and hot,” the weather service says about today, “with a high near 99. Heat index values as high as 117.”

The grim forecast prompted 30-Second Read to seek to answer a question no one had asked: do we pee less in hot weather?

Our research department is that good. It wants answers before you think to ask.

Indeed, we’re so thorough at 30-Second Read world headquarters that we checked Google and Bing. Perhaps it’s no surprise on a planet with 8 billion people, but the question had been asked before.

And …

We do pee less often when hot! Because a hot body must divert more water to sweating. (To be clear, “hot body” here means “heated,” not “sexy.”)

And guess what. We pee more in winter. Because, sure, we sweat less – and because our blood, when cold, moves from skin to internal organs, pushing our kidneys to filter more.

And now, because I’m in air-conditioned comfort, I’ve gotta go … pee.
