Kindness is all around

We must never forget that our society functions because people are overwhelmingly polite, kind, even generous. Folks hold subway doors open. They help strangers with their luggage.

In Alabama recently, I saw an extraordinary scene: An older gentleman, using a cane, was leaving a diner, and a 50 something fella not only held the door for him, but even offered to bring the man’s car around – and the old guy gave this total stranger the keys! After he moved the car, our hero went back inside to assist the man’s wife, who used a walker, into their car.

Kindness on this level exists all around us, not just in Alabama. I saw it recently in Alaska, in Iowa, even in D.C.

For all the anger and outrage that we are fed by the media, politicians, religious leaders and big corporations to manipulate and propagandize us, we must never lose sight of the fact that we are all in this together, and that kindness is – and must be – all around us.

Be kind to each other, people. It’s all we’ve got.
