We’re All Complicit

Our culture is broken, and not just our political culture. Our whole goddamn culture.

We’re riven by disagreement amped up by social media companies siccing algorithms on us to juice our engagement and their profits.

We’re goosed in our conflicts by the selfish flame thrower in the White House, for whom attention is a drug, lies are but tools to create the “truths” he’d prefer, hate is for winners and kindness is for losers.

We’re encouraged by reverence for guns and our acceptance of the human casualties that follow.

We’re complicit. All of us.

We slid and then plummeted into a deepening incapacity to see the inherent worth in others. We too often view disagreements as character flaws. We too seldom assume people of a different political party or religion or ethnicity or sexuality will act in good faith.

We think the worst first. We hate easily.

That’s how lawmakers are assassinated and maimed by gunfire in their own homes. At night. By an armed and manifesto-toting assailant impersonating a law enforcement officer.

Our culture is broken. So, yes. Goddammit.
