Roses and Writing

As I awoke this morning, I remembered my dream about planting my first roses – six to be sure some survived – next to the parsonage where we lived in 1983. It was my first attempt, and they all lived and bloomed.

An older church member once told me: “You taught me how to grow roses. All you do is dig a hole and plant the rose.”

There’s truth there. Later, after moving to Plain Dealing, Louisiana, I planted 75 roses at the parsonage. All I did was dig a hole, add a little compost and, of course, water them.

They yielded cuttings for all sorts of occasions.

Writing is much the same. Put thoughts down as they come, but don’t overthink them. Let them come from the heart.

Growing roses gives me time to be in nature.

Having moved a few years ago, I have a limited flower garden. But this spring I planted four red roses and plan two more.

God has always gotten me to the right place at the right time as I enjoy writing and growing roses.
