I was going through a box of books and came upon “Miracle at Philadelphia” about the drafting of the U.S. Constitution in 1787.
My first thought was it’s a miracle our Constitution has been the basis for how we’re governed for 235 years.
It was written by imperfect men and is not perfect. But its general basis is amazing, and many of the imperfections have been corrected over time.
Those men had various beliefs about government, but they agreed on one thing: that those who govern must serve the people and that no single person should force his will on the people.
To do this, they set up checks and balances among the three branches of government. Each with its own responsibilities and powers. No branch with all the power.
We’re in the middle of a constitutional crisis because a single person is trying to take all the power for himself. And, at least for now, the other two branches are allowing him to do so, abandoning their responsibilities.
My second thought was the Constitution may not last much longer.
