But we’ll still have guns

Yesterday’s gun slaughter of 19 children and two adults at a Texas elementary school has given us cause for gratitude – about how much more dangerous our schools could be.

Because golly. School boards, state legislatures and governors have recently undertaken the important work of keeping our children safe from … books.

Bless these brave and far-sighted public servants for banning bad books. Books hold ideas, and some ideas are bad. Especially bad are ideas that make us feel icky about the human talent for hating people not like us.

There’s more. State lawmakers and governors have enacted laws to protect our children from … gay and trans children.

A bullied gay boy confiding in a teacher? A trans girl peeing in the girls’ bathroom? Ick. Ick! ICKY!

So, yes, it’s sad about that mass shooting in Uvalde, Texas. But our politicians are addressing much bigger threats than young men shooting fourth graders. They’re banning books that make children think and empowering the genitalia police. Bless their hearts.

And rejoice. Our hate won’t keep us safe. But we’ll still have guns.

Thank you, Jeff. Tears. I watched the video imagining the grief of parents no longer able to sing their children to sleep with lullabies. Doubled over, a hole of grief so huge in their solar plexuses. Keep up the spreading of Truth.

One of the best opinion pieces I’ve read in a long time! We really need to worry more about gays & transgender folks than some deranged kid gunning down adults who are of a different race & children?!?!
