Gun worship is our nation’s second great sin.
Our original sin was slavery and the stain of prejudice it abetted, although our new Poobahs want us to forget and ignore.
But today is about our Second Sin.
Only guns would save us, we heard. And only the Second Amendment, our scriptural justification for carnage, would save our guns.
Gun deaths were the cost of protecting us from tyranny. Not, mind you, from the tyranny of an invading nation state or of a colonial power as once personified in King George III.
No, no, no. From the tyranny of our federal government. It would come for us. Be afraid. Prepare.
The gun apostles were right.
The federal government is coming for many of us. A president and his masked goons are coming for us. A compliant Supreme Court is coming for us. A limp and kowtowing Congress is letting them come for us.
Let me be clear: guns aren’t the answer to this very real tyranny.
Still, where are the fear peddlers now, these protectors of freedom?
They’re silent.
Or cheering.
