For you

What was he thinking?

“It is what it is”?

About the pandemic?

Doesn’t matter. Whatever the president intended in that interview published Monday, what counts is what the words mean for you.

If you’ve labored for months on the health-care frontlines, subjecting yourself daily to possible exposure, then “it is what it is” for you.

If you’ve closed your small business or been laid off and have lost your livelihood, then “it is what it is” for you.

If you must weigh safety versus sending your child into classrooms, then “it is what it is” for you.

If you or a loved one died alone from Covid-19, then “it is what it is” for you.

If you’re Black or Latinx and thus nearly twice as likely as whites to die from Covid-19, then “it is what it is” for you.

And if you’re cosseted in a mansion, with steel-jawed government agents to shield you from the germy masses, and if you’re rich and tested daily and needn’t worry about groceries and rent, then “it is what it is” – for you.
