Julie Andrews had a long list of favorite things. I promise you mine is shorter.
Mayonnaise
That first smell of a newly opened jar of Hellman’s Mayonnaise is like manna. Its rich tartness is sublime. And its piquancy doesn’t fade as you descend into the jar. It’s the base for most of my sauces, and I slather it on everything. Life is always better with sound effects and mayonnaise.
“Young Frankenstein”
It’s a flawed masterpiece I’ve seen too often, but it still has one of film’s funniest scripts. Led by Gene Wilder as Frankenstein, it spotlights brilliant comic actors, including Madeline Kahn. Marty Feldman’s Igor always cracks me up, while Peter Boyle’s Monster is a memorable hoot.
“Winter’s Tale” by Mark Helprin
Mark Helprin is a brilliant storyteller. His acclaimed novels and short stories include “Freddy & Fredericka,” “A Soldier of the Great War” and “The Pacific & Other Stories.” This sprawling tale of New York caught in a tale of endless winter is lyrical and exciting. I consider it the finest American novel written in the late 20th century.
